Recognizing Vera Wilsie students and their accomplishments

St. Jude's Math-athon
The second grade students were given an opportunity to raise money for St. Jude’s children’s hospital by collecting pledges to do math problems. They could choose from a paper-pencil workbook to complete or a computer program. I believe the students raised just over $1,000 for St. Jude’s. My son did the kindergarten program on the computer and it was really neat. Each child was a scientist that was helping another scientist collect his missing equipment. They had to complete four different levels with riddles and games. My son really enjoyed the program with its graphics and music! (written by Mrs. Painter)

Vera Wilsie students become first Green Team in the county

Staff and students at the Vera Wilsie Elementary School in Newaygo have decided to do their part to conserve and preserve the environment by recycling at school.

In addition to the paper and magazines that the school already collects, staff members have committed to helping their students save plastic bottles, glass and cardboard from the dumpster.

Vera Wilsie is the first school to sign-up for Recycling for Newaygo County's Green Team. The school agreed to collect at least one recyclable item for a year, record the amount collected and then take the material to be recycled.

Recycling for Newaygo County Director Bob Pinder is working with staff and students to reinforce what is taught in the classroom about waste and the "Three R's: reduce, reuse and recycle".

The Green Team School Program is available to all elementary and middle schools in the county. For more information, contact Recycling for Newaygo County at 924-5822 or e-mail at recycle4nc@comcast.net.
